Cliffside (New Jersey)

Etching, 1916, American Etchers 61, 300 x 225 mm. Fine impression on old, tan japan paper with full margins, titled, signed and dated in pencil; light time toning in the area of the old mat opening. Roth was a skilled and graceful draughtsman and a popular etcher in the Twenties whose works, along with those of many others, fell into obscurity with the recession of the Thirties and the war. Time has rescued some of those artists, but not all of them and Roth’s etchings, for all their obvious quality, remain undervalued. Despite its appealing subject, no impression of this print has appeared at auction for at least twenty years.
