TANGIER: Hollar, A Part of Tangier from Above

A Part of Tangier from Above

Etching, 1670, Parthey 1189, Pennington 1189 iii/iii, 125 x 220 mm. Fine impression on laid paper with good margins. Tangier, in Morocco and originally a Roman city, was, at various times, under the control of the Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, Portuguese, Spanish and English. It was a British possession at the time Hollar visited it, but its international character is remembered by the identifications on the print of the English Church, the Portuguese Church and the Irish Ballery, not to mention the fortified walls that preceded all of them. Hollar was one of the earliest of the international set, accompanying the rich and famous on their travels and taking pictures of where they had been.
