L’Aide de Cuisine

Etching, 1864, Bailly-Herzberg 139, 240 x 160 mm. Fine impression on chine-appliqué with large, full margins, as published by Cardart & Luquet; the stamp of the Forbes Library under the title. Ribot was an eminent painter of the realist school in France, but also a skilled and original etcher. In the latter capacity, he made a group of etchings of chefs, chefs’ assistants and other creatures in the kitchen, a fascinating genre hardly touched upon by anyone else. We have several of these.
