- PRINTS AND DRAWINGS OF MUSICAL INTEREST
Jan Pietersz Sweelinck
Engraving, 1624, 165 x 131 mm., Bartsch 22, Hollstein 99 i/iii. Muller was famous for his large mannerist engravings but, like his great contemporary, Goltzius, he was also a master portraitist. Sweelinck was a great composer and organist and a teacher, called in his time “the maker of organists.” Brilliant impression of the rare first state before the hatching on the sleeve and shoulder, on laid paper trimmed just outside the borderline and, sadly, lacking the lower plate margin with the text; a few minor wrinkles in the paper.
