Sadeler: St. Paul at Corinth

St. Paul at Corinth

Engraving, 380 x 460 mm., Hollstein 336 only state. A fine impression on laid paper with narrow to small margins, the left margin extended by an added piece of paper. The source of the image is the Acts of the Apostles 18, which tells of Paul coming to Corinth from Athens and lodging with a Jewish couple -- Aquila and Priscilla, who had been forced from Rome by the Emperor Claudius -- because "he was of the same craft...they were tentmakers." Priscilla is shown at the spinning wheel, Aquila at the loom, Paul sits at the table and writes of his current situation. A girl sweeps the floor, chickens walk around in the house, and there is other traffic. A sweet image.
