The Flower Market and the Butter Tower, Rouen
Etching and drypoint, 1907, Wuerth 463, 278 x 207 mm. Fine impression in dark brown with light plate tone, printed on a sheet of fine, old laid paper with full margins, signed in pencil; slight, probably original creases in the old paper. Rouen in 1907, before two world wars, was still recognizably a medieval city. The tower is still there, the flower market is still held, but the atmosphere is different today. Pennell captured a time, if not precisely a moment in time.
