Peasants in an Inn, Playing Backgammon

Etching and engraving, 341 x 279 mm., Hollstein 24 ii/iv, ex collections: Rechberger (Lugt 2133); Edmund Burke (L. 2794a); de Vries (?); J. Smith (?). Brilliant impression on laid paper with good margins; flattened horizontal fold. Suyderhoef, who was born, worked and died in Haarlem, was a superb reproductive print maker who captured the subtle tonalities of the oil paintings he translated through meticulous fine shadings. Apart from the facts that he was Dean of the Haarlem Guild and that he collaborated on projects and possibly studied with Pieter Soutman, almost nothing is known about him. A great craftsman working in his home town, doing what he did with exceptional skill and clearly eschewing the spotlight.
