Haden, Sunset in Ireland

Sunset in Ireland

Etching and drypoint, 1863, Drake 44, Harrington 51 first published state, Schneiderman 47 viii/xiv, 139 x 215 mm. Very fine impression with rich burr on an irregularly torn sheet of silky, laid japan paper with good margins, signed in pencil; two almost invisibly mended short tears in the upper right corner and old glue stains at the edges verso. The single, most famous British etching of the nineteenth century, Sunset in Ireland hardly needs comment. The scene is on the Dundrum River in the park of Viscount Hawarden in Tipperary.
