Dürer: Virgin & Child Crowned

Virgin and Child Crowned by One Angel

Engraving, 1520, 137 x 99 mm., Bartsch 37, Meder 41 i/ii a (of ii/ii b). Very fine, dark and sharp impression of the first state (before the scratches) and of Meder "a" quality, on laid paper without watermark (as described by Meder), with narrow margins all around; a tiny, pale brown stain on the Virgin's hand, thin spots in the corners. The printing is exceedingly even and precise and the distant, waterfront castle as well as the bird in the child's hand take their full place in the complex composition. One rarely sees the print in this combination of fine quality and condition.
