The Sower

Black chalk, and red chalk. 241 x 170 mm. Finished compositional study, clearly for a later work, as the image is enclosed within a pointed arch with framing lines outside of that. Drawn in red and black chalk on brownish textured wove paper, unsigned. The sower, seen from the back, strides and throws seed in a rough field with trees and mountains in the distance. A shovel lies near his feet. The subject, of course, evokes Millet, but the drawing style is quite different. Dr. Eric Carlson suggested Lazerges as the possible author of the work.
