A Road in Winter with Sleighs

Drawing in soft pencil and white gouache on olive-brown wove paper, ca. 1885, sheet size 257 x 356 mm., signed in pencil. Miller worked mostly in New York and New Jersey and while the location of this scene is not noted, an oil of a very similar setting in Spring would indicate that it is upstate New York. Trees may be trees, and old houses still are still to be found, but the horse-drawn sleighs in this drawing are pretty much a thing of memory and nostalgia. That aside, the sheet is a souvenir of a particular day, time and place, recorded rapidly and on the spot. The sentiment is all in the subject.
