Woodcuts, 1914, 350 x 347 mm. and smaller, Loyer 681, 695, 698, 706. Very fine impressions on Arches wove paper with full margins from the edition of 135; one short and one long tears repaired, neither affecting the image. The set includes the title page, the justification page where it is signed and numbered in ink, and a contents page
listing the four titles: La Rentrée au Port, Les Matelots Ivres, L’Arrivée du Poisson, Le Calvaire Breton. The second of these, the Drunken Sailors, is one of Laboureur’s best known images. Laboureur, though often representing the height of Parisian sophistication, was born in Nantes in Brittany and exhibited a strong artistic allegiance to that part of France in paintings, drawings, etchings, engravings and woodcuts. His woodcut style is sometimes similar to that of Félix Vallotton, but not derived from it as the two men were producing almost simultaneously. Long recognized in France as a major artist, the recent breaking up of several major collections of his works has brought much attention to him in the United States.
