Cliff and Cactus – a View at Ronda

Etching, 1923, 225 x 326 mm., Salaman (PCQ) not described (subsequent). Fine impression in brown with plate tone on laid paper with full margins, signed in ink and numbered from the edition of 52. In 1925 Lumsden published a book called The Art of Etching which, though not an instructional manual like Lalanne’s, was a seminal influence in the understanding and appreciation of etchings and is, apparently, still in print. His own output, of something over 350 etchings, focused on exotic settings, primarily India, to which he traveled several times, but also locations as disparate as Victoria, British Columbia and the ancient Moorish city of Ronda in southern Spain.
