Masked Ball at the Royal Palace, Naples

Etching, 1747, 455 x 475 mm., Bowles 233. Very fine impression on laid paper with huge margins; with the usual centerfold, which has split at the bottom into the text area and been reinforced The plate commemorates the festivities celebrating the birth of a son, Filippo, to Carlo Borbone, King of Sicily and Naples, and his wife. The ball was given on November 4, 1747. The stage holds an orchestra of over fifty string players plus wind instruments and drums, and hundreds of people dance and mill around - obviously the party of the year. As a print maker, Polanzani is best known for a famous portrait of Piranesi.
