Laurens, Clairière

Clairière (The Clearing)

Retouched counterproof (?), 265 x 430 mm. In reverse of a drawing in the Musée Fabre, Montpellier (cat. no. 150) (876-3-119), Clairière, labeled as Laurens after Rousseau. The image is on brownish wove paper with retouchings in black chalk ( ?) and white gouache. The idea that this is a drawing and not a counterproof should not be entirely discounted. The original Rousseau painting, which is titled La Forêt en Hiver, is in the Metropolitan Museum. Laurens' drawing must be after the painting and not after Rousseau's preliminary drawing as the latter does not show the full expanse of the composition.
