Brun: Two Turkish Men

Two Turkish Men and Two Turkish Women and a Child

Engraving, 1559, 74 x 119 mm., Bartsch N.D., Passavant 125, LeBlanc 108. The incursions into Europe of the armies of Suleiman the Magnificent in the mid-Sixteenth century made Turks the object not only of fear but of curiosity and therefore a fruitful subject for representation in prints. Brun was only one of many to satisfy that curiosity and his representation clearly shows them as human if exotic, while also giving an idea of the topography of their homeland. A very fine impression of this rare engraving, printing dryly at the far right of the text, with small margins and in near-perfect condition.
