La Vague

Lithograph in colors, 1893, 292 x 458 mm., Vicaire 38, Fields p. 75, Stein & Karshan 69 from L'Estampe-Originale, edition 100. Fine impression on simili-japon with full margins, signed and numbered in green pencil from the edition of 100 published by L'Estampe-Originale in 1893 and with their blindstamp in the upper left margin; the printed texture of the sky varies slightly and there is a line of demarcation at the upper left between the denser and the more open texture. Apart from two theater programs, this is Rivière’s earliest lithograph and, as such, it resembles his prized color woodcuts much more than do the later lithos. He also pencil signed the complete edition of 100, rather than, as in the later works, signing only a small number of a very large edition.
