Tug Boat by the Hell Gate Bridge, New York
Lithograph, 1969-70, 255 x 358 mm. Fine impression on thick, white wove paper with large but irregular margins, signed with initials in the stone. A powerful image in a distinctive style. Torre-Bueno, who was born in New York of Spanish descent, taught art for some time until he discovered (as many had) that it was no way to make a living, and he became a designer of custom cabs for the Otis Elevator Company. He continued to draw, though, and made prints from the Thirties at least into the Seventies, many of them quite striking, but rarely printed more than a few proofs. We have sold quite a number of them, but, sadly, there are not many left in his estate.
