Moses Holding the Tablets of the Law

Original drawing in watercolor, gouache and black ink over pencil, ca. 1935 (?), 185 x 175 mm., signed. Binder, who was born and worked in Vienna, Austria before coming to the United States, was an important figure in modern design, perhaps best known for his poster for the New York Worlds Fair of 1939-40. In Vienna, he had his own studio, Vienna Graphics, and the national designers association, Design Austria, of which he was a founder, continues his memory with the Joseph Binder award. He came to America in the early Thirties as a guest lecturer, settled in New York for good in 1936, and became a citizen in 1944. His work involves reductive compositional principles derived from cubism together with an analysis of the psychological impact of colors -- and it had considerable influence on modern American design. His posters are staples of the market but his original drawings are only rarely seen. On white paper applied to cardboard, signed at the upper left; glue stains from mounting in the white area outside the drawing.
