Evening Landscape with a Distant Town
Etching, 143 x 143 mm. Fine, early impression, showing the guidelines for the text, on thin, laid paper with large margins outside the square platemark. The Perelle family, Gabriel, Adam and Nicolas, were prolific etchers of landscape – topographical and invented – in basically the same style, so that without an engraved initial, it is virtually impossible to tell which of the three made any given etching. Furthermore, because so many of their works were imaginary or unidentifiable landscapes, it is also almost impossible, without comparative illustrations, to tell from which set any given print comes. That said, both their topographical and invented works have a certain charm, not least because of their penchant for circular views. We have other works by the Perelles;
