Etching, ca. 1920, Library of Congress 13, 218 x 340 mm. Very fine impression on old laid japan paper with good margins, signed in pencil. Horter was a Philadelphia artist and a great collector of modern art, which is a bit surprising because his own etchings show little if any influence of modernism. Technically accomplished, his etchings are quite variable in quality and interest. This is perhaps the best, and best-known, of all of them, beautifully composed, drawn and etched with fascinating detail, the scene pushed into the past by the presence of three ladies in long dresses and bonnets.
