Ville au Bord de la Mer

Etching, Curtis & Prouté 46 ii/ii, 218 x 299 mm. Fine, sharp impression on buff chine-appliqué with large margins, as published by the Société des Amis des Arts de Lyon. Appian is usually tagged on to the Barbizon artists, with whom he shared a preoccupation with the realistic depiction of landscape. He was, however, a Lyonnais artist and his landscapes tend to be more southern, extending even into northern Italy, and far more concerned with water and shorelines than with trees and forests.
