Four Biblical Episodes (2 from Tobias)

Original drawing in pen and brown ink over touches of pencil, on laid paper with a Foolscap and MC watermark (possibly Heawood 2051, dating from 1623), 234 x 222 mm. The sheet contains four separate drawings in inscribed ovals, each identified in Dutch in the same brown ink as the drawings. The subjects are The Disciples Arriving at the Empty Tomb, Tobias Cures His Father’s Blindness, The Departure (or Return) of Tobias and the Angel, and Abraham Welcoming the Angels. Such sheets were studies for the etched or engraved illustrations in the many published, illustrated editions of the Bible issued over the years in the Netherlands. Although we cannot identify the particular volume, nor the artist responsible for the drawings, the sheet would probably date from fairly early in the century.
