Trees and Hills

Etching, ca. 1920, Pousette-Dart p.35, 68 x 95 mm. Fine impression on brownish laid paper with small margins, signed in pencil, edition size unknown but probably very small. Haskell, once he returned to America from France, and moved on from the strong Whistlerian influence that marked his earlier work, applied himself almost exclusively to direct depictions of nature. He etched these in an elegant style that combined detailed study of tree formations and foliage with simple linear landscape settings, and his prints sparkle in a way reminiscent of Palmer and the British pastoral etchers. His work is much undervalued today.
