NEW YORK: Lewis, The Great Shadow

The Great Shadow, New York

Drypoint, 1925, McCarron 44 only state, 250 x 176 mm. A very fine and atmospheric impression, printed in slightly blueish black ink on heavy white, wove paper with large margins and signed in pencil; pale staining in the margins, mostly deriving from previous mounting. There were 86 impressions printed, from a projected edition of 100 and of these, 33 are not accounted for and may have been destroyed, leaving 53 extant impressions. The scene is East 34th Street, where Lewis had a studio in 1925, and a sketch made there at midnight is the basis for the print. Four workmen are around a manhole, and the lantern by which they work casts a giant shadow of one of them on a building wall. Above, a single lighted window breaks the blackness of the structure. One of Lewis' signature prints.
