Iles du Rhin (Isles of the Rhine)

Etching, 1869, 232 x 318 mm., Béraldi 284 after iii/iii, B. N. Inv. 278. A fine impression of a London printing, apparently known neither to Béraldi nor to the B. N., with a new title (Reed Gathering), and therefore a new state, on white wove paper trimmed on or within the platemark, but with a wide plate margin and the full text. Gustave Jundt was an Alsatian painter of some popularity and with a sentimental streak which did not hurt at the time (Félix Buhot also etched several of his pictures). Apart from the print's significance as the record of a painting, Bracquemond's ability to etch both in black AND white is beautifully displayed here (the reeds, the reflections in the water).
