Le Joueur de Cornemuse

Aquatint and etching with hand coloring, 1822, 320 x 426 mm., Fenaille 414 i/iii. A very fine impression, apparently the first state before all letters, on wove paper trimmed within the platemark but with 15-20mm. blank plate margin all around the image, finely and subtly hand colored in tones other than those Fenaille describes as usual, and heightened with albumen or gum arabic, possibly a trial proof. The scene is on a cobble-stoned street outside a country mansion and garden. An elegantly-dressed lady and gentleman, seen from the back, are at the right. She drops a coin into the cup of a barefoot boy at the center who accompanies the blind bagpipe player at the left. As distinct from the previous print, the colors here have quite clearly been added by hand.
