Etude de Femme

Lithograph, ca. 1900, 253 x 175 mm. Fine impression on laid chine-volant with large margins ; some spots of foxing around the edges of the sheet, not affecting the image. Pretty ladies were a favorite subject for turn-of-the-century artists, and prints by such as Helleu, Tissot and Manuel Robbe are incredibly popular (and high priced) today. Gandara is one of the forgotten artists of this genre but he drew as well as any of them and was a master of lithography, and his studies, perhaps his women, tend to have more character than those of, say, Tissot.
