Coin de Campagne à Audemps

Etching, 162 x 190 mm. Geffroy 30. Superb impression with plate tone on laid paper watermarked Delâtre, with very large side margins, pencil signed and numbered from the edition of 75 plus 4 proofs; vertical folds and tack holes in the side margins, far from the plate mark. Brouet was as true to the original ideals of the Etching Revival as any of its earlier members and even a quick glance at the work shows how much more Rembrandt meant to him than any nineteenth or twentieth-century artist. Apart from the simple human affection of the image, for both people and place, the differing textures – of brick wall, shingled roof, foliage, stone, grass and water – are really quite marvelous and, in their way, a tribute to the master of them all. Prejudiced as I may be, I find it amazing that a print of this quality can be bought today at such a low price.
