Philomela

Frontispice pour "Philomela," Livre Lyrique par Catulle Mendès (Frontispiece for "Philomela,"a Book of Poetry by Catulle Mendès)

Etching, 1863, 112 x 84 mm., Béraldi 430, B. N. Inv. 173. Provenance: Samuel Isham (Lugt 1402); New York Public Library (duplicate). Fine impression of this obscure print on heavy wove paper with good margins, apparently taken from a copy of the book, signed (?) or inscribed in pencil; pale staining at the right edge (from the book mounting). Mendès (1841-1909) was a founder of the Parnassian school of poetry and, at the age of eighteen, founder of the Revue Fantaisiste, which published many of Bresdin's prints. He was a major literary figure in Paris. Bracquemond's little frontispiece is no throwaway effort but, despite its odd subject matter (a single singing bird in a vast landscape under a starry sky), a carefully worked-out and meticulously etched composition.
