Christ Crowned with Thorns

Other Images:

Woodcut with old hand coloring, 1499, from Ludolphus: Vita Christi, P. van Os, Zwolle, 1499, 220 x 155 mm. The full page with text recto and verso. The large cut itself (actually three separate cuts printed together) measures 112 x 140 mm. The coloring, in yellow, brown and green, is clearly of the period. The image is unusual, for it makes it appear that we are looking through a window into a chamber with Christ sitting on a stone bench and two men with staffs pressing the crown of thorns onto his head. The floor has the typical Dutch checkerboard pattern. At the sides are the architectural externals with gothic columns and pilasters topped with statues of saints, apparently designed to be decorative borders but here an integral part of the illusion.
