En Auvergne

Etching, 1863, Bailly-Herzberg I-95, 320 x 239 mm. Fine impression with plate tone on chine-appliqué with large margins; foxing in the margins and a bit in the plate margin, not in the image. It isn’t often one comes across an etching signed (in letterpress) by Anonymous, but this Cadart publication declares “Un Anonyme, sculp.” Bailly-Herzberg says that it is close to Huet, but it is obviously not so close as to assign it to him at this time -- though he did do work in the Auvergne. Still, it is a perfectly wonderful landscape, etched with skill and freedom, and you can feel the wind blowing through the trees.
