Le Grand Canal

Etching and drypoint, 391 x 573 mm., Bliss 274 vii/ix (?), Bibliothèque Nationale 174. Superb impression, literally dripping with burr, on heavy laid paper with full margins, signed in pencil. Early states of this plate show a relatively spare, open landscape with no trees in the foreground. Legros later totally transformed the image into what is seen here, a virtuoso demonstration of drypoint effects, adding to or enhancing the foreground elements and setting them against the lighter background. It is one of Legros’ largest plates and probably his most dramatic and it is difficult to think of a comparable print by any of his contemporaries.
